Getting a degree in management opens some exciting doors in the business world. If your dream is to be an executive, management is probably the degree for you. While many people go back to school for an MBA in management, many top schools also offer it to undergrads. Management majors learn a broad set of business, finance, and marketing skills as well as about economics and the practical leadership skills it takes to help run an organization. If this sounds like what you want to learn as an undergrad, we highly suggest you look into these ten top programs:
UPenn
Putting UPenn and more specifically the Wharton School of Business on a list of best business programs isn’t exactly revolutionary, but Wharton takes MNGT srsly. Their undergrad program has five major focuses: strategic management, multinational management, human social capital, organizational behavior, and entrepreneurial management. Those in the management concentration can also choose to specialize in Multinational Management, Organizational Effectiveness, or Strategic Management. There are a lot of options and tracks that students interested in management can go down in this elite program.
UC Berkeley
Berkeley’s Haas School of Business offers the Global Management Program. This is a great program for those interested in international business and management. The program is hard to get into and you have to get in as a freshman, but it comes with exciting opportunities like a semester in London and internships. They also have a Management Entrepreneurship & Technology track if you are less interested in the global lens.
NYU
NYU and their Stern School of Business host the Management and Organizations Department. The department has an undergrad program that offers a couple of different concentrations such as Management Concentration, Management Consulting Track, and Entrepreneurship Co-Concentration. Whichever track you choose, NYU has a first-class, people-centric approach to management.
UT Austin
UT Austin houses the Management Department through their McCombs School of Business. While most interested in Management at McCombs will choose their Management major, they have some interesting majors and minors that are Management adjacent as well. They offer a major in Supply Chain Management and minors in Energy Management, Global Management, and Risk Management for those who are interested in learning more about a specific niche in the field of management.
Indiana Univerity at Bloomington
The Kelley School of Business at IUB offers a Management Major. Their program combines classes in organizational management, human resources management, organizational behavior, business policy, entrepreneurship, and international business. They also offer honors in leadership seminars and many business electives as part of their program.
MIT
MIT’s Sloan School of Management promises Management for the science-minded. If that sounds like you, their undergrad program is a great option. It will be more science and math than some of the other programs on this list which can lean more heavily on the business side of management, but it’s MIT. You can expect great science. They offer a couple of different concentrations, but you should look into their Course 15-1 Management (they call their majors “courses” it’s a whole thing.)
Cornell
Cornell’s JC Johnson College of Business and specifically Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management offers a BS in Applied Economics and Management. Ok, that was a lot of words and a lot of them were the same words, so TLDR the Applied Economics and Management track is a great option at Cornell. Their approach is very flexible and many Dyson students also choose to double major or pick up a minor. Dyson is also connected to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences so many management students also major and take classes in life sciences, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, or applied social sciences. There are a lot of options at Cornell which is perfect for the student who wants to do Management and something else.
The University North Carolina Chapel Hill
UNC-Chapel Hill takes a different approach to management than a lot of schools on this list. Management degrees are almost always through a business school. However UNC’s Management and Society Major, B.A. is under their sociology department. This makes it not for everyone, but if you are looking for an “interdisciplinary major that focuses on the institutional context and inner workings of organizations” this one is a great choice. This major is also great for those who want to get an MBA in management later and have a more holistic undergrad experience.
CMU
CMU’s Tepper School of Business offers a couple of management tracks. They offer concentrations in Operations Management, Marketing Management, and Strategic Management. They also offer a host of majors and minors that relate to business management. Having choices inside of a management track lets CMU students create their own niches in the program.
USC
Maybe USC shouldn’t make this list for the simple fact that it doesn’t have a management major in their Marshall business school. But for those interested in USC and management, there is a B.S. in Business administration and for those not in the business school a Management Consulting Minor. We wanted to add it since at USC business students learn Management and those not in the business school can choose to minor in it, which might be the right path for those interested in both management and another major.
Management is a great choice for the business-minded undergrad. Even if you find yourself at a school that doesn’t have a management major as part of their business school, many offer classes in management. However, we highly suggest researching your schools and making sure they have the specific programs you want before you apply.
