10 Best Undergraduate Schools for Operations and Information Systems

So you love Operations and Information Systems? First off, impressive. We don’t meet a ton of teens who know they want to get into this field before they take college courses in it. OIS is an exciting and honestly pretty new field that combines business and technology to help businesses run better and more efficiently. And as tech and business become more interconnected than ever before, this degree is only going to become more valuable to those both interested in the tech and business sectors. If you already know that OIS is for you or even if you are just curious, it pays to check out these schools’ programs.

Carnegie Mellon

CMU’s Operations Information Systems major is a great option for those looking at a way to practically apply computer science. It’s not a secret that Carnegie Mellon is a great choice for those interested in the sciences, but this major takes a business approach. It focuses on computer science, human-centered design, business management, and software engineering. They also offer specialized concentrations in Data Science, Business Analytics, and Information Security & Privacy which allows students to find a niche.

MIT

When we are talking about applying computer science to business, MIT’s Sloan School has to be on that list. It’s kind of their whole thing so we had to put them on this list even if they don’t really have a super-specific OIS major. Their program is annoyingly called Course 15 (it sounds less like an undergrad program and more like a lab experiment out of a science fiction movie that goes tragically wrong.) There are three tracks in Course 15: Management, Business Analysis, and Finance. Those interested in OIS, probably lean more towards 15-2: Business Analysis. You can also double major in multiple tracks. While MIT is a little less specific than the other schools on this list, their approach to business is very in line with the field of OIS.

UT Austin

UT Austin and their McCombs school of business offer a great program in Information, Risk, and Operations Management (IROM). The major consists of four academic disciplines: Decision Science, Information Management, Operations Management, and Statistics. It’s a program that looks at the study of OIS from a lot of angles.

UPenn

Ok, Wharton for Business is good, isn’t a revolutionary take, but their Information Systems Track is great for those interested in OIS. The track is under The Operations, Information, and Decisions Department. Whether you are dreaming of working at a top financial firm or going on to graduate study, the OIDD curriculum gives students a great foundation in OIS.

NYU

NYU’s school of professional studies offers the BS in Information Systems Management (STEM). This is a tech-forward approach to understanding OIS. This functions as a degree in STEM. If you want a more business approach, this might not be for you. TLDR, you are going to have to rock the tech side of this field in NYU’s program.

UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley’s major in The Operations Research and Management Science (ORMS) is a bit hard to get into. You have to be invited and then added to a waiting list. Honestly, it’s a bit of a process but a great opportunity for those motivated to try for it. If you are doubly motivated, there is an honors program for the major.

Norte Dame

Notre Dame has an Information Technology, Analytics, and Operations department through their Mendoza School of Business. For undergrads, they offer the Business Analytics major and minor. Students in the program focus on statistical methods and data analysis as it applies to the fields of predictive analytics and data visualization. They also offer several graduate programs if you decide to continue your studies.

Georgetown

Georgetown’s Operation and Information Management Major through their McDonough School of Business is really new. The first class that will graduate with it is 2023. Georgetown made the major because they understand that this is a growing market and that is pretty cool. While it is offered through their business school, the curriculum requirements include a lot of computer programming. If you want to learn both Python and business this new major might be the one for you.

Cornell

While many programs in OIS are through business schools, Cornell’s is through their College of Engineering. Their BS in Information Science, Systems, and Technology dives into the fields of operations research, modeling techniques, statistics, computer science, Econ, and more. They also offer an honors track if you are hungry for awards in OIS.

University of Michigan

If you are interested in Information Systems Management, the University of Michigan has the major at their Dearborn campus. They have two tracks in the major. You can choose either no concentration or a concentration of Information Systems Security. Both routes focus heavily on the tech side of OIS. They also offer a minor in Information Systems Management.

OIS can go by a couple of different names, making it sometimes challenging to find the program. Look for the words “operations” and “technology” and you will usually be able to find them. All the schools on this list are great choices for those interested in getting into the field of OIS, but there are many more now offering programs in this new, hot field.
