Top 41 Schools That Don’t Have Legacy Admissions

Since the SCOTUS decision that ended affirmative action, legacy admission has caused a lot of consternation. One notable report by Raj Chetty, David J. Deming (both Harvard) and John N. Friedman (Brown University) revealed that kids from the richest one percent of American families are more than twice as likely to attend the country’s most elite private universities compared to middle-class students with similar test scores.  Experts have also said the abolition of legacy admission could transform the entire college admissions process completely.

Impressive High School Internships in the Environment

There are few issues more pressing than climate change. As the world battles with unprecedented fires, storms, and drought due to man-made climate change, it’s going to take a Herculean effort to, not only cut carbon emissions, but also adapt human life. The good news is, there is a lot young people can do. In fact, a group of kids recently won a long-shot case in against the government in Montana for the harmful effects of climate on their home state. As always, we advise our students to seek out internships where they can actually work on projects and produce results. It’s far more impressive to be somewhere you can say you accomplished xy and z than it is to have a fancy company or organization on your resume where you obviously spent your internship getting coffee for executives.

College Admissions Changes: Legacy Admissions

Admissions have changed a lot in the last few years, but we’re about to see a whole new wave of changes crash into some of our nation’s oldest institutions. If you’re reading this, we’re sure you know about the Supreme Court decision that banned schools from using race as a factor in college admissions in late June. This started a lot of discourse about race and privilege in admissions, which then of course led to discourse about legacy admissions. In the wake of the lawsuit, Wesleyan University announced they’re ditching the practice, but it didn’t end there. Last month, a new group of students announced a lawsuit against the college everyone loves to sue, Harvard – this time calling for an end to legacy admissions.

Impressive High School Internships in Politics

The important thing to keep in mind when seeking a high school internship is to first hone in on an academic area of expertise. We always advise our students to pick a niche early in high school and develop it throughout. Your classes and extracurriculars should reflect your area of expertise. If you’re a student interested in politics there are many paths you can take. Get specific. Are you interested in government? Campaigns? Policy? Figure that out first and then figure out where to go.  The idea is to really dive in where you can make an impact. It’s more impressive (and more rewarding!) to have an internship in a smaller, community-oriented setting where you can get your hands dirty than it is to land something at a prestigious, national organization where you’ll be getting coffee.

There are 400+ international internship opportunities for you to explore, but the college remains grounded in its New Jersey campus. Since the founding of Princeton in 1746, the university has only had 20 presidents, and this continuity has led to a culture that deeply values tradition, history, and legacy. Part of this legacy is an intense commitment to free speech and promoting complex dialog — even when it’s comfortable. Princeton has recently withheld admissions statistics, but The Daily Princetonian estimates the acceptance rate at a little under 6%.

It welcomes the free spirit (its “open curriculum” means you have no core requirements), and there’s no shortage of academic options despite its size and rural location. As part of the Five College Consortium (including Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst), Amherst offers its students access to over 7,000 courses and over 10 million items within its inter-library system. That being said, Amherst’s incoming Class of 2027 only had a 9% acceptance rate, so getting in is a doozy.
